Parathyroid cells treated with PTH show a decrease in intracellular cAMP accumulation on adding ATP. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of this ATP effect. The cells responded well to stimulation with PTH(1-34) under normal conditions. The inhibitory effect of ATP on cAMP accumulation was more conspicuous in PTH-treated cells than in controls. PTH(1-34)-induced cAMP accumulation was enhanced by pretreatment with submaximal concentration of forskolin. Under these conditions, the ATP effect was reduced in magnitude and the intensity of the ATP effect was much greater in cells stimulated with PTH. The ATP effect was potentiated in the presence of IBMX, an inhibitor of phosphodiesterase. The cAMP response to maximal stimulation with PTH(1-34) was not affected by pretreatment with IBMX. In addition to its effects on cAMP accumulation, ATP also inhibited forskolin-induced adenylyl cyclase activation and cAMP-dependent protein kinase activity. These findings suggest that ATP exerts its effect on cAMP accumulation by inhibiting not only adenylyl cyclase activity but also possibly the guanine nucleotide binding protein(s) involved in receptor-mediated signal distinguishing among American college student's racial and ethnic identification and comfort in corresponding to different ethnic groups.
The authors explored the relationship between American college students' ethnic and racial identification and their comfort in corresponding with ethnic groups through several investigations. First, a survey of 112 racial and ethnic groups was conducted and the authors categorized ethnic groups into similarities and differences groups based on the similarity of people who identified with them. Next, the authors used a questionnaire to explore the relationships between comfort and identification and between comfort and ethnic identification for students. The mean comfort reported by the study participants was 3.9, with students reporting least comfort with the European American and African American groups. When comfort was regressed on the similarity between the self and ethnic groups, the highest correlation occurred for the Asian group, followed by the Latino group and then African American group.
