Sharks Devils Preview
Last year, the Sharks would have been the overwhelming favourites to win this game in New Jersey, however, it would appear that last year's fortunes have been reversed. This year the Sharks have struggled as a team, getting off to a 1-3 start and seeing their team scoring being lead by a defenceman. Usually, a defender leading the team in points isn't such a bad thing, but on a roster which has the likes of Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, and Logan Couture, the trend is somewhat disturbing. All-Star playmaker Martin Havlat's absence is hitting the Sharks hard, and their play so far hasn't showcased the dominant team they have been in the past.
New Jersey has quietly made their way to a 3-1 start, a massive improvement over last year's early season performance under John Maclean which had the team virtually eliminated from the post-season by mid-March. A cautiously optimistic outlook for New Jersey is largely due to a balanced defensive and offensive approach, with superstar snipers Kovalchuk and Parise resisting the urge to take offensive risks in exchange for defensive liabilities. Close games against the Kings and Predators (both of which Jersey won in the shootout) have shown the Devils renewed approach to a team game as opposed to a superstar lead drive towards individual stats. The Devils should continue their win streak given San Jose's struggles, although I'm predicting it will take a shootout to win it.
